I was lying on the massage table — relaxed, breath softened, in and out of conscious awareness — when I felt it. The space between presence and memory. The tender place where absence once hurt now pulsed with something entirely different: understanding.
I didn’t go into that session expecting a reunion.
But somewhere in that alpha–theta space, I felt my mother’s essence beside me.
Not the one I remembered from childhood — the woman who felt distant, or left too early.
Not the one from the final hospital months.
But the quiet presence of her soul — and the knowing that came with it.
She didn’t say much. But what she said changed everything:
“Sharon… every moment you thought we were apart was really a moment you were learning how whole you already are.”
I wept — but not from grief.
From recognition.
We don’t always understand why certain maternal patterns unfold the way they do.
Sometimes the love we long for doesn’t arrive in the form we expect.
Sometimes the absence teaches us what presence feels like.
Sometimes the separation isn’t punishment — but preparation.
And our body remembers all of it.
The fascia.
The breath.
The nervous system.
They record the silence and the sound.
The holding on — and the letting go.
And, when we’re ready, they can also dissolve what no longer needs to be carried.
