The Cost of Unhealed Silence: Balancing Maternal Bonds Through Healing

Empathy Without Words

Sometimes, empathy is conveyed more powerfully through a tender, comforting presence rather than words. However, do we truly understand the emotions held by the silent one, or is it enough just to feel and receive the comfort needed? Can we soothe or ease someone else’s pain, knowing that both individuals are providing and receiving exactly what each other needs?

The Human Desire to Ease Pain

It’s human nature to want to ease another’s pain, whether it’s physical, emotional, or mental. As a professional healer, I’ve seen many who take on others’ pain to prevent further suffering. But does that really work? More importantly, is it healthy for you to do so?

My Mother’s Intentions

My mom probably knew this but couldn’t find a healthy way to express it. She had this wonderful idea for a child’s (or adult’s) mythical stuffed animal called ‘Ouchy Pouchy’ with a magical pocket to dissolve or unburden one’s pain just by writing it down or imagining pouring their hurts into it.

The Toll of Sacrifice

My mom grew up with a lot of emotional pain but always wore a smile. She avoided adding to the suffering she saw in her family by pouring herself into studies, debates, and being genuinely kind and compassionate. After almost completing her master’s degree, marrying a doctor, and later having four children within five years, it took a toll.

In 2003, she had a heart attack misdiagnosed as GERD, leading to quadruple bypass surgery. She never left the hospital, battling a wound infection that left her chest open and exposed. Watching her struggle and eventually losing her led me to start my own healing journey shortly after her death. This deepened my mission to heal maternal bond wounds and repair maternal love.

Reflecting on Maternal Bonds in Real Time

On a flight after visiting my eldest, I noticed a mother struggling to comfort her crying infant. I wondered: Can a mother truly remove a child’s discomfort and pain, or can she only love them through it? Does a child hold a mother’s pain, or can we comfort without absorbing it?

A Prayer For Healing

I wished I could hand the mother an ‘Ouchy Pouchy’ but instead, I prayed for the belief that a mother must absorb her child’s pain to be resolved. And vice versa, that a child can be free from absorbing a mother’s pain. In real-time, I witnessed a shift in the mother’s tone and the infant settling quietly.

Vision for the Future

Witnessing this moment was awe-inspiring. It touched my DNA, the collective, and my children and future grandchildren. Being a witness to healing, which is the primary role of a healer, is one of the most profound ways any one can change the painful narrative from the past to create a more loving present.

Drawing Practical Insights for Healing

Reflecting on this experience, here are profound lessons for the journey of healing maternal bonds:

  1. Understanding the Impact of Unspoken Emotions: Recognize that unhealed silence and emotional pain can pass through generations. Acknowledging and addressing these feelings is the first step toward healing.
  2. Embracing Empathy Without Absorbing Pain: Understand the difference between empathy and taking on someone else’s pain. We can support and comfort without sacrificing our own well-being.
  3. Using Tools and Techniques for Healing: Consider innovative tools like ‘Ouchy Pouchy’ or practices such as ThetaHealing to aid in releasing past trauma and fostering healthier emotional bonds.
  4. Reflecting on Personal and Generational Healing: Think about your own maternal lineage. What patterns or traumas might you be carrying? How can you begin to address and heal these wounds?
